Background of the study
Efik poetry is a profound expression of the cultural and aesthetic values of the Efik people, characterized by rich metaphors, rhythmic structures, and cultural idioms. Translating this poetry for international readership presents unique challenges as it requires not only linguistic accuracy but also the preservation of artistic and cultural nuances. Translators must navigate the complexities of conveying figurative language, symbolism, and cultural context in a manner that resonates with readers from different cultural backgrounds (Udo, 2023). The task is further complicated by the scarcity of standardized guidelines for poetic translation, leading to a range of interpretative approaches that can either enhance or diminish the original work’s impact (Anyanwu, 2024). This study evaluates the specific challenges faced in translating Efik poetry by comparing various translated anthologies and gathering insights from literary translators and international readers. The goal is to identify best practices that maintain the lyrical beauty and cultural essence of Efik poetry while making it accessible to a global audience.

Statement of the problem
Translating Efik poetry for international readership is fraught with difficulties. Literal translations often fail to capture the emotive and metaphorical layers inherent in Efik verse, while overly adaptive translations may lose critical cultural references (Udo, 2023). Inconsistencies in translation approaches result in varied quality and misinterpretation, hindering the global appreciation of Efik literary art (Anyanwu, 2024). This study seeks to explore these challenges and determine how current translation practices affect the fidelity of Efik poetry, ultimately aiming to propose strategies to overcome these obstacles.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess current translation methodologies for Efik poetry.
  2. To identify challenges in preserving poetic nuances.
  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing translation fidelity.

Research questions:

  1. What challenges are encountered in translating Efik poetry?
  2. How do different translation approaches affect the preservation of cultural and aesthetic elements?
  3. What best practices can be adopted for international translation?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the challenges of translating Efik poetry for international audiences, ensuring that cultural and literary values are preserved. The insights gained will benefit translators, literary scholars, and cultural institutions in refining translation practices that bridge cultural divides while maintaining artistic integrity (Udo, 2023; Anyanwu, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the translation of Efik language poetry for international readership and does not cover other poetic genres or languages.

Definitions of terms:

  • Poetic translation: The process of rendering poetry from one language to another.
  • Efik language: The indigenous language of the Efik people.
  • International readership: Audiences from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
